EMPLOYMENT

Technology Director
Independent Consultants Association

As a new organization supporting independent consultants across the country, ICA uses the Internet for membership gathering and information dissemination. Frayer was retained to supervise the development and implementation of web technology during the creation and operation of the ICA web site, but has since had his duties expanded to cover all technology issues in the association..

Network Administrator
TWC Distributors

Answering directly to one of the owners, this was a part-time position developing and managing a Microsoft Windows NT-based multi-city virtual private network (VPN), using Netopia 910 routers and assorted Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and supporting DataPro accounting software. The position was entirely technical in nature, however it is one created for Frayer as a result of the project work Frayer did for TWC Distributors while working for CTI Networking. Frayer continues working with them on a consultancy basis.

Developer/Owner/Operator
buyneatstuff

buyneatstuff is both an e-commerce gift site on the Internet and a retail booth at the Red Barn Flea Market. Frayer designed and created the e-commerce site using NetObjects Fusion and a myriad of add-ons, with the site hosted on servers in California. The booth focuses on computer sales & consulting and AMS’ performance-driven nutritional supplements. The business is operated on a part-time basis, primarily on the weekends, with his wife. The retail booth allows him to remain practiced in cash handling, merchandising, sales technique, staff management, and inventory control.

Computer Specialist
Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue

This was also a part-time position, assisting Division Chief David Quaderer with workstation upgrades and assorted computer issues on a Novell NetWare 5.1 network.

Contract Certified Novell Instructor

Frayer performed independent contract work in NetWare and other computer-related instruction, at locations scattered across the eastern and middle U.S. The certification has been maintained, even though the demand for Novell instructors has declined. A list of vendor-authorized courses Frayer is certified to teach is available on request.

Network Engineer/Consultant
CTI Networking Services/Chandler Technologies

At CTI, Frayer installed, repaired, and supported personal computers and computer networks belonging to clients. Work included installing and maintaining Microsoft Windows NT servers, as well as other Microsoft products, in addition to supporting Novell NetWare servers. This work was done in locations from Ellenton (just north of Bradenton) to Naples. As the company also used a NetWare/Windows NT network internally, Frayer was assigned network administration responsibilities, but was prevented by the general manager from implementing even simple security measures, a subject that contributed to his decision to resign. Frayer continued to do work for CTI as a contractor after formal employment ended.

Assistant Systems Administratort
LineShark Communications, Inc.

This position was also part-time, assisting the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of an ISP with managing their Radius authentication databases, Sendmail-based subscriber e-mail systems, Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 web servers, and help desk issues, primarily using Windows NT-based and Linux-based systems. This permitted the CTO to perform other managerial and corporate marketing/development tasks.

NetGuide/B.R.A.I.N. Team Forum Host
Brainbuzz.com’s NetWare Tech Center

This unusual position was held as a spare time job, collecting and presenting useful Internet links for those seeking information on Novell NetWare to web site users. Frayer also provided technical assistance on NetWare in live “chat” sessions, in written articles, and in question/answer form.

Senior Technical Instructor/Consultant
Romac Emerging Technologies/Romac Education Services

Frayer introduced to Romac the idea of contracting instructors to assorted education centers, and did so by performing all of the relevant tasks, from job acquisition to completion, lacking only the accounts receivable responsibilities. When, in January of 1999, the company purchased its own education center, Frayer was transferred to that department. There, responsibilities included classroom setup for both myself and other contract instructors. Frayer also performed engineering projects for Romac Emerging Technologies’ Network Department when requested and when schedule permitted. High student evaluation scores helped make him one of the highest utilized instructors on Romac’s payroll.

Freelance Network Consultant/Internet Consultant

Frayer maintained an independent technical practice to keep current with real-world technology and techniques. His former clients included:

  • SouthTrust Bank (downtown St Petersburg) -- documenting end user computing procedures
  • The Wave Wireless Networking -- managing a seven member team installing and supporting spread-spectrum and microwave WAN links under contract
  • Manatee Memorial Hospital -- assisting in the planning of a NetWare 3.x to 4.x migration.

Expert Technical Instructor Level III
New Horizons Computer Learning Center

One of the few people hired by this franchise with existing field work and certifications, Frayer quickly became principal staff instructor for Novell Certified classes, and supervisor of the other staff CNIs. Typical responsibilities included teaching students with varied backgrounds to become network administrators, managers, and field engineers, with the primary goal of giving them the knowledge to become Novell-certified in those subjects. Frayer was highly rated by his students, with average scores of 9.97 on a scale from 1-10 during his last two months with the company. Frayer taught most of the Novell classes for the Clearwater facility (which has since relocated to Tampa), and was often requested to teach Novell classes at New Horizons’ award-winning Atlanta facility.

Freelance Computer Journalist

In his spare time, Frayer had developed a flair for technical writing, having been encouraged by one-time InfoWorld columnist Nicholas Petreley to do so. This lead to various journalistic projects, including a Master CNE study guide that was never completed due to major changes in Novell’s requirements (but did lead him to become a Certified Novell Instructor). Some of these accomplishments include:

Technical Editor of Networking Technologies by Andres Fortino and Arnold Villeneuve (McGraw-Hill), The Novell Certification Handbook - 2nd Edition by John Mueller, CNE (Tab/McGraw-Hill), and The Novell CNA/CNE Study Guide - 2nd Edition by John Mueller, CNE (Tab/McGraw-Hill).

Columnist: PC Life and The NetWare Files, both published electronically until 1997 via Exec-PC and the WildNet Communications Network.

Articles and reviews published in InfoWorld, Business, Clarion Tech Journal, NetWare Connection, and Connect.

Information Technology Manager/Network Engineer
Teleflex Electrical

Teleflex hired Frayer because their network users didn’t trust the network enough to actually use it. Prior to his arrival, the network was administered by the Engineering Department. Frayer was assigned to create the location's first IT Department, redesigning, rebuilding, and managing what became a multi-server 10BaseT/10Base2 LAN, using Novell NetWare 3.11, 3.12, and Microsoft Windows NT 3.5, all from what had been essentially an unsupervised, patchwork, single-server 10Base2 network. Frayer added APC UPSes, nightly tape backup, RAID 5 storage, e-mail, virus protection, network management software and more, dramatically reducing network down time and building the users’ confidence (and resource utilization). He also formed and supervised an effective Virus Response Team to contain and control the spread of computer viruses on company and employee computers.

Network Engineer
Weaver Marlen Business Systems

At Weaver-Marlen, Frayer was Senior CNE, responsible for planning, developing, installing, and supporting LANs (primarily 10BaseT) for clients from Clearwater to Fort Myers.

PC/LAN Administrator
Champs Sports

Frayer was hired by Champs Sports to install and administer their PCs, having demonstrated a skill at this in his previous employment, however a hiring freeze prevented them from hiring him directly into that role. Instead, Frayer replaced an AS/400 midrange computer operator on the night shift (even though he had never seen an AS/400 until then), and installed their network when he wasn’t printing reports. Three-months later, they arranged to move Frayer to the day shift and officially made him their PC/LAN Administrator. When business growth surpassed the original network, Frayer designed, installed and managed a new UTP token ring LAN, using NetWare 3.11, Cabletron hubs, RAID 5 disk arrays, NetWare for SAA 1.3, with multiple servers, connecting four rings to the local AS/400 and a Milwaukee-based  IBM mainframe. While he was at Champs Sports (then a division of Kinney Shoes, which in turn was owned by Woolworth), Frayer was involved in all aspects of Information Services (IS) department management as an unofficial assistant manager, including the planning, budgeting, purchasing, inventory management, user training, and documentation of the department. The LAN served as a model for other Woolworth data centers nationwide.

Operations Manager
Savings Today, Inc.

Savings Today was a family-owned franchisor of direct mail coupon advertising magazines, eventually becoming one of the largest of such chains in the country, as determined by distribution. Frayer came into the company as an advertising salesman, selling coupon advertising in the Sarasota and Venice markets. As the company grew, it needed more administrative staff, and Frayer came in from the field to work with the computerized accounting system (originally using a TRS-80 personal computer). As time passed, he gathered more responsibility, until he had the task of managing the administrative operations and information technology (with the exception of accounting, which had its own department), including production scheduling, composition inventory, and advertisement tracking (using a database application of his own design).

Bookkeeper
National Mattress Co.

National Mattress, a bedding manufacturer and wholesaler, used a TRS-80 personal computer to maintain their general ledger, accounts payable, and payroll, but each system had its own checkbook, and each checkbook was manually maintained, using double-entry accounting procedures. For the two years Frayer worked for National Mattress, he worked both the computerized bookkeeping and the manual system associated with it.
